Do I Qualify?

Childcare subsidies (CCDF) serve families earning up to 85% of State Median Income — for a family of four, that can be $60,000–$80,000+ depending on your state. Head Start is free for families below the poverty level. Many state Pre-K programs are universal for 4-year-olds. After-school programs at eligible schools are free for all students.

Step-by-Step

How Do I Apply?

  • Contact your Child Care Resource & Referral agency. Your local CCR&R can help you find licensed childcare, check subsidy eligibility, and start the application process. Find yours on our county pages.
  • Apply for childcare subsidies. Apply through your state's childcare assistance office. You'll need proof of income, work schedule or school enrollment, and your child's birth certificate.
  • Enroll in Head Start. Contact your local Head Start center directly. Priority goes to families below the poverty line, but foster children, children with disabilities, and homeless families also qualify.
  • Check your school district for Pre-K. Ask your local school district about free Pre-K enrollment. Registration typically opens in spring for the following fall.
  • Claim your tax credits. File your federal tax return to claim the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. Free filing is available through IRS Free File or VITA sites.
